OCE Discovery 2012

A photo of the LiquidWild teamAmong approximately 3000 attendees, the CEL attended the OCE Discovery 2012 Competition, held May 14-15 at the Toronto Convention Centre. CEL interns LiquidWild Media, Faculty of Law student Sandra Gonzalez, and Masters student Brian Cheung (along with the help of Ahmad Vasel Be Hagh, Jamie Smith, and Project Lead Dr. Rupp Carriveau) competed in various student entrepreneurial competitions.

Cheung took home first prize ($2500) in the Video Contest, while LiquidWild represented the CEL in the ELP Competition. Gonzalez competed in the Social Enterprise category, where University of Toronto’s Heather Wray was awarded first place with her Rooftop Gardens.

During the event, CEL Co-Director Dr. Francine Schlosser took part in what is now the Guiness Book Of World Record’s “World’s Largest Business Mentoring Event”. Twenty rounds of three-minute, one-on-one sessions allowed Dr. Schlosser the opportunity to offer insight to many entrepreneurs on areas such as startup (concept, development and launch), growth (sales and financing) and commercializing research.

The event was an overall success for CEL members as well as the Office of Research Services, who manned a booth and provided information on their programs to attendees. We’re looking forward to next year’s event!
