I would like to welcome you to the Department of Communication, Media and Film (CMF) at the University of Windsor. Our department has a rich history dating back to the late 1960s. It began as Communication Arts in 1969 and was the first communications program established in Ontario and only the second in all of Canada. Over the decades, the department has expanded and continues to reflect and engage the evolving media landscape.
Given the ever-changing digital environment in which new platforms of communication continue to emerge, we are committed to providing an innovative curriculum that facilitates experiential learning opportunities and collaborative pedagogical approaches that encourage students to develop critical research, thinking and methodological skills as well as creative capacities and training in media making. Currently, CMF is only one of a few programs in Ontario that combines a theory-based social sciences formation with a significant media production component. This combination of theory and practice provides our students with a very unique experience.
Our programs, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, embrace one of the university’s pinnacles—social justice. As such, the goals of CMF include: (i) developing media literacy and fostering active, democratic citizenship in an increasingly mediated world, (ii) understanding social justice issues and how they relate to media representation and power relations, (iii) providing opportunities for creative empowerment through competencies in various forms of media production. Students who graduate from our programs end up with both the analytic and practical skills that are in demand; the internships we offer help students generate a portfolio to showcase their work to potential employers. And we offer all of this on one of the most diverse, urban campuses in the country!
As you browse through our website, we hope you will sense the excitement and enthusiasm amongst faculty, students and staff that our programs generate. And, we encourage you to contact us with any questions, requests for more information and/or personalized tours of our facilities.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Valerie Scatamburlo-D’Annibale
