Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate

Program Details

  • Learn through pair work, small group work, and teaching demonstrations
  • Successful completion of this program is recognized for TESL Canada Professional Standard 1 Certification

This course is divided into three sections:

  1. Learning: focuses on learning theory, learner, and the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  2. Teaching: focuses on preparation skills (planning), classroom skills (methods and techniques), and evaluation skills (testing).
  3. Language: focuses on the systems of English: phonology (pronunciation), vocabulary, and grammar (form and use).

Entrance Requirements

In order to be admitted into the TESOL Certificate, program,  you must have completed a minimum of a Bachelor's degree. You can demonstrate your academic qualifications through submission of a copy of your transcripts or a certificate.  If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of English proficiency. Course Fees

$1,750 CDN (fees includes Participant Manual and textbooks) and $100 CDN registration fee.

Course Policies

In order to receive certification, you must complete and pass all components of the course. A passing grade in each component is 70%. The practicum is graded on a fail/pass/high pass/distinction basis. If you fail, you may redo up to two assignments including the practicum.

Admission into the 20-hour practicum portion of the course is contingent upon satisfactory performance during the preceding coursework.

Course Dates & Location

The TESOL Certificate Program will be offered beginning in January 2018. Dates and registration details will be announced soon.

Classes are offered based on enrollment. Please note this is subject to change.

Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm to 9:30pm. This is subject to change. Note that observation and practicum hours may be held during the daytime. Classes are held at the CELD Annex on the second floor of Vanier Hall on the main University of Windsor campus.

  • Successful completion of this program is recognized for TESL Ontario Certification

Practicum Details

Practica are conducted in real adult English language classes. The 30-hour practicum is divided into 20 hours of classroom observation and 10 hours of practice teaching. For the 10 hours of practice teaching, students are assigned to a mentor teacher.

Classes are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Please note this is subject to change. The occasional Saturday class will also be held. Note that observation and practicum hours may be held during the daytime.

NOTE: In order to register for the TESOL Diploma program recognized for TESL Ontario certification, you must have first completed the TESL Certificate program.
