“Technical Terminology and Argument Analysis & Appraisal”

Abstract: In his 1976 textbook, Reasoning, Michael Scriven claims, in effect, that the generally available vocabularies of natural languages tend to supply the terminology needed for the analysis and critique of the arguments and reasoning expressed in everyday discourse, and hence textbooks teaching reasoning and argument improvement don’t need to teach technical jargon—which is a good thing, because the use of technical terminology impedes the important discussion of arguments and reasoning among the uninitiated.

But what is “technical terminology”? Can we analyse and assess reasoning and arguments adequately without it? Does it have no benefit? I will discuss answers to these questions with a view to coming to a verdict on Scriven’s claims.
