“TEDx Practice: We Should be Able to Argue Well”

Abstract: This is a dry run of a talk to be given at UWindsor TEDx on February 17. In the style of a TED talk, this presentation is meant to be accessible to the general public, to present an original idea, and it must be under 18 minutes.

The position presented will be that argumentation can improve by attention to the purposes of arguers. Arguing can serve many purposes and our biggest obstacles to arguing well may be our cross-purposes, especially as our purposes in arguing tend to go unstated. In many other ways it seems we have skill in arguing: Western culture provides 2 ½ thousand years of the study of argument in Western culture, and people argue regularly and frequently as part of our ordinary lives.
