“Informal Logic and Conceptual Analysis”
Abstract: In Dilemmas, Gilbert Ryle contrasts formal logic with what he calls ‘informal logic’. For some, Ryle’s idea of informal logic is considered not to be particularly helpful in clarifying informal logic as the term is commonly understood. Others hold that it requires attention by anyone who wants to do theoretical work in the field. In this talk I shall discuss Ryle’s idea of informal logic as conceptual analysis by comparing it with other forms of conceptual analysis, explain its motivation and relation to other forms of inquiry, and suggest how it could be of methodological relevance to the current debates in argumentation theory by discussing a particular case of two divergent theories of argumentation: pragma-dialectics and objective epistemic account.
