“The Cooperative Orientation of Deliberation”
Abstract: A conspicuous feature of deliberation dialogues is their cooperative nature. In order for deliberation to get off the ground, the participants need to have some overlapping goals, but there may also be disagreement about goals or their relative priorities and about the appropriate agenda for discussion. What happens when agreement about goals or about agenda breaks down? Participants need to find new areas of agreement or address their disagreements and renegotiate a shared basis for deliberation. There might be a shift to persuasion or negotiation. Through observations about the relationships between deliberation, persuasion, inquiry, and negotiation dialogues, this presentation will explore which types of dialogue are best suited to recovering or maintaining an orientation toward cooperative problem solving when some kinds of disagreements arise during deliberation.
