RIEL'S DEFENCE

 RIEL'S DEFENCE
October 28 - 30, 2010

Maurice Charland, Concordia University
Thomas Flanagan, University of Calgary
Desmond Morton, McGill University
Jennifer Reid, University of Maine

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the trial of Louis Riel for high treason. At his trial Riel gave two remarkable speeches, which are of great cultural significance for Canadians, one before, and one after the jury’s deliberations. This two-day conference will consider Riel’s speeches from a number of perspectives, including the historical, the political, and the rhetorical. The conference aims not only to draw attention to these speeches as a rich resource for study in themselves, but also to add to our understanding of Riel and the circumstances of his trial.

The Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric (CRRAR) at the University of Windsor invites proposals for presentations that focus on one or other of Riel’s speeches. The proposals (with ‘Riel’ in the subject line) should be sent to the address below and received by July 15, 2010.
