January 13 - March 28, 2014

Kathryn was on loan to the Centre for Teaching and Learning for 3 months from the University Teaching Development Centre at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. At Victoria, she is a faculty member in academic development and has recently been promoted to Senior Lecturer. She earned her MA in English from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada in 1996 and her PhD from Massey University in New Zealand in 2000. Kathryn works mainly with new faculty, supporting them with settling in at Victoria University, and running the Orientation to Academic Life program. She coordinates a Masters level course for faculty, called the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Learning and Teaching ( PHELT ) program. On occasion, she also teaches in English and Linguistics. Her main research interests lie in the professional development and socialisation of new university teachers (GAs/ TAs and faculty), and the reconceptualisation of the PhD program in New Zealand universities.

Kathryn is an active member of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) – the southern hemisphere equivalent of Canada’s Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). She has been a HERDSA executive member since 2003 and served as Vice President from 2004-2006. In July 2008, she co-chaired the 31st annual international HERDSA Conference in Rotorua, NZ.

Besides loving teaching and working with new faculty, Kathryn is a keen runner and completed two half marathons in June in New Zealand. She ran the 5km “Run for the Cure” along the riverfront in Windsor one week after arriving here in October.
