Virginia S. Lee

Virginia Lee is consultant and managing member of Virginia S. Lee & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in teaching, learning and assessment in higher education. She is also President Elect of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education, the largest professional organization dedicated to educational development in North America.

Previously, Dr. Lee served as Associate Director, Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, North Carolina State University, and Director, Graduate Student Teaching Programs, and Consultant, Center for Teaching and Learning, UNC-Chapel Hill. At both universities she held visiting faculty appointments, teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses and serving on dissertation committees.

Dr. Lee worked on The Student Learning Initiative, a national project funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts and led by Alverno College (Milwaukee, WI) with 26 participating baccalaureate institutions in the United States. She led the Inquiry-guided Learning Initiative at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Lee has published and presented nationally on a variety of topics related to teaching and learning in higher education. She is the editor of Teaching and Learning through Inquiry: A Guidebook for Institutions and Instructors (Stylus, 2004). The book documents many aspects of the inquiry-guided learning initiative at NC State. Previously Chair of the POD Network Publications Committee, she edited two of its publications: Essays on Teaching Excellence and the “Thriving” column of NEA’s higher education newsletter, the Advocate. She serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Faculty Development, Innovative Higher Education, and To Improve the Academy.

She holds a Ph.D. (Educational Psychology), UNC-Chapel Hill; M.B.A., New York University; and B.A. cum laude (English Literature), Smith College.
