Orientation session welcomes new faculty members to campus

Jason Kiernan is excited to be at the University of Windsor.

He left a position as a nurse practitioner at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital to pursue a new career path as a lecturer in the Faculty of Nursing.

“I wanted to transition into more of a research role and for a number of reasons, that wasn’t going to happen at the hospital,” Kiernan says.

He was one of seven new faculty members attending an orientation session Monday, August 13.

“It has been really interesting,” he says. “I have been learning about the tenure requirements, the expectations regarding research.”

In addition to teaching existing courses, Kiernan will oversee a new program, the graduate diploma in oncology and palliative nursing.

“This we will be starting from the ground up, developing new courses and lectures,” he says. “I'm really looking forward to being a part of this process.”

In addition to presentations on research and tenure, Monday’s agenda featured a discussion of diversity and its relationship to teaching, and tours of the offices of human resources, finance, graduate studies, Information Technology Services and the Leddy Library.

Dave Johnston had to skip the library tour in favour of a meeting with some of his new colleagues. The latest librarian to join the Leddy’s staff, he started his new duties as the liaison librarian for philosophy and languages, literatures and cultures in April. He is also a member of the team developing the library’s Web site and will help to promote open access initiatives in the library and across campus.

“This job aligns perfectly with my own interests,” he says. And moving to Windsor from his previous posting at Mount Allison University represented a bit of a homecoming for the Essex native.

“I’m already familiar with the city and the area, so that’s nice,” Johnston says.

Besides Johnston and Kiernan, the newest faculty members include:

  • Kyle Asquith, assistant professor in communication, media and film
  • Brian A. Brown, assistant professor in communication, media and film
  • Christopher Fredette, assistant professor in business
  • Alan Richardson, professor in business
  • Peter Voyer, assistant professor in business

Monday’s events were hosted by the Office of the Provost.
