Late run earns Windsor national baseball title

A single run earned in the bottom of the ninth inning was all the Lancer baseball team put on the board, but it was enough to win the squad its first-ever Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association championship, Sunday evening at Amherstburg’s UCCE complex.

Michael-Anthony Ferrato hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Sully Robson as the winning run to secure a 1-0 victory over the Concordia Stingers in the gold medal game, capping a winning weekend for Windsor’s club team, which notched a 5-2 win over Carleton and 4-2 over Saint Mary’s before dropping a 2-5 decision to York during round-robin play. Windsor defeated Saint Mary’s again, 3-2, in the semi-final on the way to the championship game.

“We played well when it mattered the most,” said Lancer head coach Frank Jeney.
