Soccer teams to open home seasons this weekend

The Lancer men’s and women’s soccer teams will play their first home games of the 2014 season this weekend on Alumni Field.

Both Windsor squads have earned 2-1 records thus far and will host the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday and the York Lions on Sunday. The women play at 1 p.m. and the men at 3:15 p.m. Admission is free.

In another soccer development, Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday that Lancer head coach Steve Hart will serve as an assistant coach with Canada’s men’s squad at the 2015 Summer Universiade in South Korea.

The 28th world university summer games are set for July 3 to 14 in Gwangju. Hart is the second Lancer coach named to the Canadian roster for the 2015 Universiade. Women’s hockey head coach Jim Hunter will be an assistant coach for the women’s team for the winter games in January in Spain. Read more at goLancers.ca.

The women’s hockey team plays a home-and-home pre-season series with Guelph this weekend, hosting the Gryphons at South Windsor Arena at 4 p.m. Saturday, then heading up the 401 for a rematch at Guelph at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Lancer football team has earned another win without playing a game. Its September 1 loss to Queen’s has been overturned due to the participation of an ineligible player for the Gaels. All team and player statistics remain in place, but the official score is recorded as a 1-0 forfeit and Windsor now boatss a 2-0 record heading into its bye week.

Ontario University Athletics selected a 58-yard touchdown catch by Evan Pszczonak in Saturday’s 39-34 win over Laurier as its play of the week. The pass from quarterback Austin Kennedy with 30 seconds on the clock capped a comeback victory for the blue and gold.
