Blood donor clinic Tuesday offers chance to get swabbed

A campus donor clinic by Canadian Blood Services on Tuesday, February 3, also offers students, faculty and staff the opportunity to register for the One Match Stem Cell and Marrow Network.

The procedure is a simple cheek swab to collect a genetic sample, which will be entered into the registry for patients who need a stem cell or bone marrow transplant to treat leukemia or other diseases. Potential donors must have a Canadian health card and be:

  • between 17 and 35 years old;
  • in good general health; and
  • willing to donate to any patient in need.

The CAW Student Centre’s Ambassador Auditorium is the setting for the blood donor clinic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the stem cell registry from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Blood donors may book appointments by calling 1-888-2DONATE (1-888-236-6283). Walk-in donors are still welcome but appointments will better accommodate donors’ working schedules.

As with previous clinics, the Department of Human Resources encourages all eligible employees to participate in this worthwhile process and asks any employees who wish to donate to make the necessary arrangements with their supervisors regarding the possibility of extended lunch or break periods.
