Hall of Fame athlete proves mettle at 1997 national meet

Twice an all-Canadian and four times an Ontario University Athletics all-star, Mike Nolan (BSc 1997) received the Olympic Shield as top male Lancer athlete in 1997. While this period pre-dated the varsity pentathlon, he competed in a number of events that year, when the St. Denis Centre played host to the country’s track and field championship meet for the fourth time.

Part of Windsor’s gold-medal 4x200m relay team, Nolan also medalled in the 60m hurdles and shot put and competed in long jump and pole vault. His performances still rank in the Lancer all-time top 10 in seven track and field events. The Alumni Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 2014.

Kinesiology student Richard Johnston has prepared a series of articles—one on each of nine previous occasions Windsor has held the national championship meet, leading up to the March 12 opening of this year’s tournament. Read his piece on the 1997 tournament at goLancers.ca.
