New Canterbury College student residence comes at “opportune time”

A new residence to house 62 students, being developed by Canterbury College on Patricia Street south of Riverside Drive, “comes at an opportune time,” acting provost Jeff Berryman said Wednesday at a gathering to celebrate the announcement.

“The University of Windsor is on track to have record enrolment,” prof. Berryman said. “We have a waiting list for our residences.”

The three-storey structure will come at an estimated cost of $5-6 million. It will consist of 32 single apartments and 30 rooms for shared accommodation arranged around common kitchens and living space.

The building will be divided internally into five “houses” and replaces three houses owned and occupied by the college north of its Geoffrey Fisher Hall — Kingston, Langdon, and Rayson houses.

Canterbury College is affiliated with the University of Windsor and the Anglican Church of Canada. It currently operates residences for 140 students; the new facility will bring its total capacity to 180.

Principal Gordon Drake said the expansion will provide an environment in which students can learn as much from each other as they do from professors.

“The new residence will significantly elevate the profile of Canterbury College in its role as part of the broader University of Windsor community to enrich the lives of our students,” he said.

Demolition of the current houses on the site will begin within weeks, with the new building expected to be ready for occupancy by September 2019.
