Shawna MunroArts alum Shawna Munro will offer an introduction to the craft of cross-stitching in a workshop Saturday at the Chatham Cultural Centre.

Workshop to tout benefits of slow craft

Crafting offers a break from the hectic pace of modern life, says Shawna Munro, which helps explain why it is enjoying a resurgence in popularity.

A graduate of the UWindsor visual arts program (BFA 2009) and administrative assistant in the Office of the Associate Vice-President, Enrolment Management, she is leading a workshop to teach a number of craft skills on Saturday, March 2, at the Thames Art Gallery in Chatham.

“It makes you take the time to just focus on one thing,” Munro says. “There’s no multitasking involved.”

Radical Craft Day will offer a discussion of her artistic practice, as well as instruction in cross-stitch, embroidery, crochet, and jewelry making.

“Slow craft is just any type of craft that takes a long time, purposely,” she says. “I find a lot of people are going back to making things by hand, just because they make you happy.”

The workshop will run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Chatham Cultural Centre at 75 William St. N. Find registration details on its website.
