Panel to discuss temporary foreign worker relationship to local communities

Students have organized a panel discussion of the relationships between temporary foreign workers and the southwestern Ontario communities which host them at 11:30 a.m. today — Thursday, March 28.

The panel will feature:

  • professors Tanya Basok and Glynis George of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology, who are conducting research about migrant experiences in the Kingsville and Leamington area;
  • Tony Hogervorst, a grower in Watford, Ont., and migrant worker ministry specialist with the Roman Catholic Diocese of London; and
  • Justine Taylor, science and government relations manager for Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers.

The event is a class project by students in the course Ways of Knowing — Stephanie Gonçalves, Michelle Gomes, Sara Mickovic, and Chelsea Viselli —  led by instructor Tim Brunet.

“The course allows students to network with community experts, prepare for civic engagement opportunities, and to build their knowledge of dispersed collaboration,” says Brunet. “The migrant worker project is one of three that students will work on in the course Ways of Doing, offered in intersession 2019.”

The public is invited to attend in room 302, Leddy Library West, or through Facebook Live.
