Refugee status adjudication subject of lecture

Whether an applicant wins refugee status in Canada often comes down to who is making the decision, says Sean Rehaag.

A professor from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, he will deliver a free public lecture entitled “Experimenting with Refugee Status Adjudication,” at noon Friday, March 29, in room G101, Ron W. Ianni Faculty of Law Building.

Rehaag’s research has found that some adjudicators grant refugee protection much more frequently than others, depending in part on how they assess the credibility of claimants.

In this talk, he will share the preliminary findings of an experiment that involved hundreds of law students — including some from the University of Windsor — acting as simulated adjudicators to help shed light on factors that influence credibility assessments.
