Ceremony to commemorate victims of Montreal Massacre

The Womyn’s Centre, in partnership with the Engineering Student Society, has planned a ceremony Tuesday to commemorate the victims of the Montreal Massacre as the centrepiece of a series of events observing the National Day of Remembrance of Violence Against Women.

The day will begin with an information fair featuring local organizations committed to ending violence against women and service agencies which provide support for women in the CAW Student Centre Commons from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A procession will leave the student centre at 4:30 p.m. and stop at the Memorial of Hope between Essex and Dillon halls for a tribute to the 14 victims of the slaying at Ecole Polytechnique, then head to Winclare A, Vanier Hall, for a formal program of speakers, concluding with women’s studies professor Renée Bondy.

A screening of the 2009 film Polytechnique will follow at 7 p.m.

Silence to observe anniversary of Montreal massacre

Members of the campus community are invited to observe a minute of silence on Tuesday, December 6, at 11 a.m. for the women killed in the Montreal Massacre.

The Canadian government has designated December 6 the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in commemoration of the 14 victims gunned down at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989.
