Business professor gains national recognition for mentorship

His volunteer work and leadership development in the Windsor community have earned professor Jim Marsh of the Odette School of Business recognition as one of Startup Canada’s Top 10 Mentor Rock Stars.

Business student Bradley Ouellette nominated Marsh for the Canada Mentorship Challenge hosted by Startup Canada, which enhances competitiveness and prosperity by supporting Canadian entrepreneurship.

“He has been a mentor of mine for over four years, and has done tremendous things for students and community that largely go unknown simply because he doesn't show off,” Ouellette says. “I am the first person from my family to go to university and his mentorship has been so paramount to my success.”

The Canada Mentorship Challenge, hosted in partnership with CATA Alliance and the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, is held annually to encourage organizations and groups to mentor more than 10,000 enterprising Canadians over the course of the week.

As a mentor, Marsh will meet and support emerging entrepreneurs from across the country, an activity he is already familiar with. He gives counsel to students at the Centre for Enterprise and Law, drawing on his background of practical experience from running several businesses, including Marsh Food Services and SCM Technologies. Marsh previously garnered the Faculty Mentor Award for UWindsor’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team at the 2011 ACE National Competition in Toronto.
