UWindsor grads to carry on Catholic Campus Ministry

Two UWindsor grads working for Assumption University have pledged to carry on the work of Campus Ministry as chaplain Rev. Chris Valka prepares to take up a posting in Toronto.

“Campus Ministry will continue to provide a rich experience of spiritual, liturgical, educational, and social opportunities for students,” says Thomas Dula, faith formation coordinator.

Dula and his wife, Andrea Kitz-Dula—the ministry’s program coordinator—each hold two degrees from the University of Windsor: Bachelors of Arts in Drama in Education and Community, as well as Bachelors of Education.

Both have also prepared for their roles as lay campus ministers by completing the Frank J. Lewis Institute for Campus Ministers. Kitz-Dula says their studies at UWindsor have also helped to prepare them for the jobs.

“We have the opportunity to merge creative thinking with our faith,” she says. “Our education has provided us with an approach that makes for a good fit.”

Tina Pugliese, director of the School of Dramatic Art, agrees.

“Andrea and Tom are living examples of their faith and they masterfully apply their dramatic art training in leading others,” she says. “They are two of the most self-motivated learners I have had the pleasure to teach and I cannot think of more suitable choices for these positions.”

Campus Ministry provides programming that ranges from social service projects and religious retreats to community dinners. Thomas says it aims at an atmosphere that is welcoming and inclusive, based on the teachings of Christ.

“Our goal is to recognize and respond to the needs of the campus in a way that creates and maintains a purposeful community,” says Kitz-Dula.

Valka will begin an appointment as pastor of St. Basil’s parish on June 30. A home base of the Basilian order, the church is located on the campus of St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto.
