Medical tragedy subject of presentation

Lewis Blackman, a healthy, gifted 15-year-old, underwent elective surgery in November 2000. In one of the most modern hospitals in the United States, he bled to death over 30 hours while those caring for him missed signs that he was in grave peril.

What happened? Why did it happen? How can we prevent this from happening again?

Michelle Freeman and Susan Dennison of the UWindsor Faculty of Nursing will consider these questions in their free public presentation, entitled A Promise to Learn—A Commitment to Act: The Lewis Blackman Story.

Part of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School for Health Professionals series, the session promises door prizes and certificates of attendance. It will be presented twice: Wednesday and Friday, October 16 and 18. Both sessions run 1 to 2 p.m. in room 203, Toldo Health Education Centre.
