abandoned lot overlaid with art designsA workshop Saturday offers a chance to take a creative approach to city planning and civic enhancement.

Workshop to design uses for empty city lots

Artist Kiki Athanassiadis, a technician in the School of Creative Arts, will lead a free three-hour workshop Saturday which will cast participants in the role of both clients and designers as they re-design abandoned lots in the city and at the same time address their own desires for civic improvements.

Desire and the City: A Citizen’s Abandoned-lot Design Consultancy is part of “Possible Futures: What is to be done?” the 2014 Windsor-Essex Triennial of Contemporary Art. It begins at the Art Gallery of Windsor at 1 p.m. October 11, and will include a walking tour of local empty lots before returning to the gallery for the design portion.

No design experience is necessary and the workshop is open to all, but spaces are limited. To register, e-mail triennial@agw.ca with “Desire and the City” in the subject line.

The Art Gallery of Windsor is located at 401 Riverside Drive West.
