Workplace health promotion earns kudos for University

A community award recognizing the University’s comprehensive strategies to promote workplace health is the result of the work of many individuals across campus, says Marcela Ciampa, manager for employee engagement and development in the Department of Human Resources.

She headed a UWindsor team receiving the Gord Smith Healthy Workplace Award from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit on October 22.  The award honours public and private sector organizations who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in providing environments that create and support healthy lifestyles.

“This award not only recognizes the work being carried out by the Department of Human Resources and the Workplace Wellness Committee, it also recognizes the health promotion activities and programs being performed by many individuals and departments across the University,” Ciampa says.

The Workplace Wellness Committee, established in October 2013, conducted a survey of employee wellness interest earlier this year. The information gathered through this process has been instrumental in identifying the wellness needs and interests of employees, says Ciampa.

“The committee has created a Workplace Wellness Action Plan, designed to support and encourage health-enhancing personal lifestyle practices, and will be launching some new initiatives in 2015,” she says. “We invite employees to share suggestions through the Workplace Wellness Suggestion Box.”
