Week to celebrate the humanities kicks off with Welcome Centre reception

UWindsor president Alan Wildeman will launch Humanities Week with a reception in the new Wyandotte Street Welcome Centre on Friday, September 18, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Sponsored by the Humanities Research Group, Humanities Week will celebrate the importance of the humanities—languages, literature, history, law, art and philosophy, to name a few—to all academic disciplines.

Highlights of the reception will include Dr. Wildeman’s announcement of the names of the five finalists in the “WHY Humanities?” contest, which asked students to produce a video, essay, poem, or other form of artistic expression outlining what the humanities mean to them. The winner, who will receive a semester’s free tuition, will be announced September 24 at 5 p.m. in Ambassador Auditorium.

Also at the event will be UWindsor’s cartoonist-in-residence Scott Chantler, as well as English professors Dale Jacobs and Suzanne Matheson, who will have information on the Art Gallery of Windsor’s current exhibit, “Between the Panels,” which features the work of four noted Canadian comics artists with Windsor-Essex County connections.

The Humanities Week reception marks the first formal event in the University’s newly-completed Welcome Centre.
