Week of activities to celebrate study of nursing

Nursing is a caring profession, but part of that responsibility is self-care, says Patrick Frias. The third-year nursing student has organized both professional activities and fun ones for National Nursing Students’ Week, November 16 to 20.

Frias notes that this year’s theme is “Nursing the mind—care starts with you.” It means celebrating the work, but also remembering to take a break.

“How can we take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves first?” asks Frias.

The activities are clustered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday:

November 16

  • Pediatric Dental Hygiene, Toldo Health Education Centre second floor. Donate a new toothbrush to support children’s health in Windsor elementary schools.
  • Smoothies Sale, Toldo Health Education Centre second floor, 8 a.m. Receive a fresh smoothie in exchange for a donation of cash or a new toothbrush for the drive above.
  • Scrub Sales, Toldo Health Education Centre entrance. Janet Fashions on hand to sell nursing uniforms.
  • Movember Duct Taping, Toldo Health Education Centre lobby, 10 a.m. Make a donation to support men’s health, and help tape two nursing students to a wall.
  • Info Booth, Toldo Health Education Centre entrance, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Share what mental health means to you and receive a goodie bag.
  • Zumba and yoga, St. Denis Centre multipurpose room, noon to 3 p.m.
  • Wound Care presentation, Toldo Health Education Centre room 204, 1 p.m. Professor Sherry Morrell will speak on this topic as part of the IHI Open School.

November 18

  • Guest Speaker, Odette Building room B06, 1 p.m. Adjunct nursing professor Karen Williamson will discuss “To be in a patient’s shoes: Changing nurses’ perspectives on their plans of care.”

November 20

  • Info Booth, Toldo Health Education Centre entrance, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn about the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario and what it offers nursing g students.
  • Table tennis, House of Pong, 511 Ouellette Avenue, 6:30 p.m. Finish a long week with some fun—only $5 to play.

The local activities are presented by the Nursing Society, the UWindsor chapter of the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association.
