Casino puts money down on fight against cancer

A donation from Caesars Windsor will help the fight against cancer, says a UWindsor professor researching the disease.

Lisa Porter is translational research director for the Windsor Cancer Research Group, which received $10,000 Tuesday from the casino’s Concerts for a Cure campaign. It donated $1 for every ticket sold for October or November shows in its Colosseum concert venue, resulting in $20,000 split evenly between the group and the Pajama Angels advocacy charity.

“This support helps us provide cutting-edge equipment that can be used by a network of cancer researchers and clinicians throughout our city,” Dr. Porter said during a cheque presentation before a concert by the Canadian band Walk Off the Earth. “The Windsor Cancer Research Group appreciates the vital role Caesars Windsor plays in our community with this generous partnership.”

The casino has donated more than $8 million since 1994 towards the fight against cancer, supporting local non-profits such as the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice of Windsor, Transition to Betterness and In Honour of the Ones We Love.
