Campus sets record in United Way contributions

UWindsor faculty and staff donated a record of almost $122,000 to the United Way in 2017, campus campaign organizers announced as final figures became available this week.

At its wrap-up reception in December, the team confirmed a collection just shy of $99,000, and said it was confident of reaching a goal of $100,000 as donors came forward by year’s end.

The ultimate result exceeded expectations, said chair Datta Pillay — the $121,917 raised is the highest annual collection ever.

He noted that individual donations are trending up, while the number of donors is trending downward. Last year’s 337 supporters included 60 retirees: “The most generous donate the major share. We need to increase participation.”

Dr. Pillay thanked the volunteer canvassers and senior administrators, as well as the staff of the United Way Windsor-Essex County, for their contributions to the success of the charity effort.

The University of Windsor is a finalist for the “Campaign Hero Award,” which recognizes a team demonstrating creativity, enthusiasm, and energy in leading a workplace to increase its donations. A winner will be announced at the “I Believe in My Community Awards Celebration,” April 26.
