Today is the deadline to RSVP for a conference hosted by the Health Equity and Social Inclusion Interdisciplinary Research Group, and the School of Social Work, concerning issues related to newcomers to Canada.

The event is set for the afternoon of Wednesday, April 24, and will feature:

• nursing professor Kathryn Edmunds on “You Have to Adjust Yourself”: Women Temporary Agricultural Workers in Canada. Dr. Edmunds’ current research interests include the relationships among displacement, gendered migration, structural violence, and health experienced by temporary agricultural workers in Canada, and how the concepts of culture, cultural competence, and cultural safety are utilized in nursing and healthcare.
• Sarah May Garcia of the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network and Michelle Suchiu of the Windsor Essex Local Immigration Partnership on Cross Sectoral Partnerships: Charting a Way Forward. Garcia has more than 15 years of experience in education, program management, and community engagement in the settlement sector, nearly 10 years of those in the health-care sector. Suchiu is executive director of Workforce WindsorEssex and in that role holds the responsibilities of the community connector for WE LIP.
• psychology professor Ben Kuo on Research and Intervention in Support of Recent Syrian Refugees in Canada: Lessons Learned. Dr. Kuo is director of the Multicultural Clinical and Counselling Research Group at the University of Windsor. As a clinician, he has worked with and treated culturally diverse clients, including international students, immigrants, refugees, racial and ethnic minorities and non-minority individuals in North America and Asia.

The event is being made possible by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Collaborative Research Group Fund.

“Health Equity and Social Inclusion: Newcomers to Canada” will run 1 to 4:30 p.m. in Windsor Hall, 167 Ferry St. The conference is free and open to all. To register your intention to attend, email sswevents@uwindsor.ca by April 5.
