Workshop informs students on issues and services

A workshop hosted by the Organization of Part-time University Students on Oct. 22 drew a great turnout to hear from speakers on a wide variety of topics, organizers say.

Presentations included:

  • professor Cynthia Stirbys from the School of Social Work on the importance of diversity;
  • Kayla Weiler of the Canadian Federation of Students Ontario on the federation’s programs and services and challenges facing post-secondary students;
  • Yahia Abdelbar of TD Canada Trust on financial literacy and what that means for students;
  • Hussein Zarif of Canada by Choice Immigration on opportunities for newcomers.

OPUS staff discussed mental health programs available through Beacon and insurance provider Green Shield.

Part-time engineering student Yazan Kaloti won a prize draw for $250.

“The event could not have been a success it was without our volunteers and staff who worked behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly,” says executive director Maryan Amalow. “We host these gatherings to bring students together to discuss important issues that affect student life and show the value of their membership.”
