Luncheon shows appreciation for athletics and recreation student staff

As Lancer teams advanced in post-season play, athletics support staff worried about the prospect of hosting the Queen’s Cup for the Ontario University Athletics championship in men’s hockey the same weekend as the Final Eight tournament for national women’s basketball.

One thought kept his department from panicking, acting director of Athletics and Recreational Services Mike Havey said Friday: “We knew we had a student employee who could step up and take on that project.”

Lancers show appreciation for student support staff

Working for the Department of Athletics and Recreational Services means having an employer that understands school comes first, says Jordan Brescacin.

“It has been a job that is very flexible,” says Brescacin, a Lancer football player in the final year of his studies in the concurrent math and education program.

A member of the event staff tasked with compiling basketball statistics, he was one of the Lancer student staff members honoured for their hard work and dedication Wednesday at the Blue and Gold luncheon held at the St. Denis Centre.

Semester’s tuition to keep sailor afloat

BComm student Cole Barbour said a voucher for a semester’s tuition he won during a draw at Wednesday’s Welcoming Celebration will help to keep him afloat, which comes in handy in his line of work—he’s a combat information officer with the Canadian Navy.

Currently holding the rank of ordinary seaman, Barbour hopes that completing his degree at the Odette School of Business will help him to advance.
