Former Lancers named to Canadian IAAF World Team

Former Windsor Lancer track & field athletes Melissa Bishop and Nicole Sassine have been named to the Canadian national team for the 2015 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Beijing, August 22 to 30.
 
Bishop, of Eagenville, will compete in the women's 800m while Sassine, of Windsor, will run as part of the Canadian 4x400m relay team.
 
"The World Championships are the last major measuring stick as we prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games," says Peter Eriksson, Head Coach and Chief Technical Officer.

UWindsor student-athlete recognized as woman of influence

Lancer alumna Nicole Sassine was one of 19 female scholar-athletes from across the province honoured by Ontario University Athletics as “Women of Influence” at a luncheon held Tuesday, May 7. The award honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports and fields of study.

Sassine says she is proud to have won recognition both for academic and athletic accomplishment.

Windsor alumna honoured among country’s top student-athletes

Canadian Interuniversity Sport named UWindsor grad Nicole Sassine (BHK 2011, B.Ed 2012) to its Academic Top 8 for the 2011/12 season. The award recognizes one female and one male student-athlete from each of the four CIS regional associations for their academic and athletic successes.

Sassine was an A+ student in kinesiology, earning academic all-Canadian honours and membership on the Dean’s Achievement List and the President’s Honour Roll each of the past four years. In 2012, she received the DeMarco Trophy as the University’s top female student-athlete.

As she and her teammates warmed up for the 4x400m relay at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championship meet in Winnipeg this past March, says Nicole Sassine, “We tried not to think about what was at stake.”

Lancer track athletes step up to pitch in

Faster, higher and stronger are no problem, but how about cleaner? About three dozen members of the Lancer track and field teams took on a new challenge Friday: litter.

The student-athletes donned rubber gloves, grabbed trash bags, and spread out across campus to clean the grounds.

“We want to show people a different side of the Lancers,” said education major Nicole Sassine, a co-captain of the women’s team. “We’re not just athletes; we give back to the community.”

Lancers hailed as nation’s top track athletes

Canadian Interuniversity Sport recognized a pair of Lancers as the country’s outstanding performers on the track this year, Thursday morning prior to the start of the national championship tournament.

Nicole Sassine, a fifth-year kinesiology student, was named female track athlete of the year. She received a similar honour at the Ontario University Athletics championship after she won gold in the 300m and the 4x200 relay and added silver medals in the 60m hurdles and the 4x400.
