New staffer wins jackpot along with permanent posting

Christine Côté got a wonderful start to permanent employment with the University of Windsor, winning a $1,000 US prize from the recruitment firm that put her on campus.

She received the “Job Jackpot” prize Thursday from Express Employment Professionals, the staffing provider that helped her land a job as administrative financial clerk in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Côté won the competition for the position’s permanent posting and begins in that capacity today—Monday, June 20.

The Job Jackpot is a random draw that rewards associates who are issued ballots for periods of employment, said Colleen Gaudette, owner of the company’s Windsor franchise.

Côté was “ecstatic” with the surprise.

“I never thought I would win,” she said, adding she has no immediate plans for spending the windfall.

Panel on refugee issues to include UWindsor representation

An event marking local observance of World Refugee Day will feature a panel discussion along with the premiere of a Windsor-produced film documenting the experiences of young refugees.

The film, entitled Through Their Eyes: Stories of Refugee Youth, brings to the forefront the often-overlooked experiences of young refugees living in our community, says panelist Erwin Selimos, a doctoral student of sociology.

“It provides us with the opportunity to listen to and learn about what it means to be a young refugee in Canada,” he says.

Joining him in discussion are co-director Lana Oppen, a UWindsor alumna (BSc 2012, BA 2014); social worker Shelley Gilbert of Legal Assistance of Windsor; law professor Sujith Xavier; communications student Lina Chaker; and others.

The event, hosted by Windsor Women Working with Immigrant Women, is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Pentastar theatre of the Capitol Theatre, 121 University Avenue West. Find ticket information on Eventbrite or phone Cassandra Richardson at 519-973-5588, ext. 601.

Artists’ talk to include film screening

Two artists with UWindsor ties will discuss their practices, processes and the development of their work in a free public presentation June 22 at SB Contemporary Art.

Instructor José Seoane and alumnus Christopher McNamara (BA 1989, MA 1993) will provide insight into current and past works; each will also screen a short film of their own creation.

The event begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the gallery, 1017 Church Street.
