Spring Open House to give prospective students first taste of university life

UWindsor’s annual Spring Open House on Saturday, March 4, will give high school students and their families an opportunity to visit campus, review programs, and meet with faculty, staff, and student representatives from 56 program and service areas.

The day will feature presentations from each faculty, as well as special sessions on transitioning to university and planning career paths. Tours of the campus, student residences, athletics facilities, the new social work building, the Aeronautics Leadership Training Facility, media and film studios, computer science, and the Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre are also on the agenda.

Free bus service from the London and Toronto areas, as well a complimentary lunch and a chance to win a semester of free tuition are among the day’s highlights.

Weekend promises playoff action for Lancer fans

Lancer fans will have a lot to choose from this weekend, with playoff contests at home for women’s hockey and basketball, and on the road for track and field and men’s hockey.

The women’s hockey squad will seek to stave off elimination Friday after dropping the first game in its best-of-three series against the Guelph Gryphons, 3-0 Wednesday. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at South Windsor Arena. Game 3, if necessary, will be back in Guelph on Sunday, February 26.

The women’s basketball team will tip off against the Ryerson Rams in an Ontario University Athletics quarter-final Saturday at 2 p.m. in the St. Denis Centre. The Lancers earned a bye through the preliminary round after finishing atop the west division standings.

Tickets for these home games are $10, with a youth and senior rate of $8, and $3 admission for UWindsor students. There will be no advance ticket sales; pay at the door starting one hour before game time.

The men’s hockey team will be looking to close out its best-of-three quarter-final against Ryerson in game two, Saturday in Toronto. Windsor took Wednesday’s opener 4-2. Game three, if necessary, will be Sunday at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Track and field athletes will compete in the OUA championship meet, Friday and Saturday at York University. The men enter ranked second in the province and the women fourth.

A loss to the McMaster Marauders ended the post-season run of the men’s basketball team. Mac won the first-round game 71-63, Wednesday in Hamilton. Lancers Mike Rocca and Micqueel Martin, with 17 and 13 points respectively, led Windsor. Read a full game recap.

Campus offices to close Friday

Most UWindsor offices will close Friday, February 24, at the end of Reading Week.

The Leddy Library will retain its regular hours of operation. The Paul Martin Law Library will close Friday and resume regular hours of operation on Saturday, February 25.

The Crocodile Grill in Vanier Hall will open Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m.; Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m.; and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 11 p.m.

The CAW Student Centre will be closed Friday. The Pizza Pizza and Tim Hortons Express stations in the building’s Marketplace will open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All Food Services outlets will resume regular operation Monday, February 27.

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences invites until March 14 nominations and applications for the position of Director, Women’s and Gender Studies Program.

The call is directed to tenured members of the faculty and seeks a candidate with a clear innovative vision for extending the program’s reach in research, creative activity, teaching, and community engagement.

The Department of Communication, Media and Film invites until March 28 nominations and applications for the position of department head.

The call seeks a scholarly leader of international standing who can invigorate the department’s vision to be leaders in research, digital media production and education and foster an environment of shared governance, collegial collaboration, and broad participation.
