Online diary records student involvement in Indian hydro-engineering project

Dylan Verburg grew up on a farm, and his experience with small construction projects there has proven invaluable in his current challenge — deploying equipment in a drainage pond outside the Indian capital of New Delhi in an attempt to improve water quality.

“Two 50-foot sections of tubing were placed … with the intention of oxidizing the inlet stream before it mixes with the main body of the lake,” the civil engineering student writes in a blog on the Windsor Engineering website. “Six additional lines are placed strategically in the main body of the lake,” located along the Yamuna River in North Delhi.

He will measure the resulting changes, which aim to aerate the water, allowing beneficial bacteria to flourish and naturally restore the ecosystem.

“There is so little dissolved oxygen in the water that life forms depending on oxygen can’t survive, making the water a prime breeding ground for pathogenic organisms such as bacteria, parasites, and mosquitos,” Verburg writes.

His participation in the research project is supported in part by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarships in Water and Energy, established in celebration of the monarch’s diamond jubilee.

Erika Koehn and Victoria MahonStudents Erika Koehn and Victoria Mahon take the full measure of the eight-metre tall Christmas tree in the CAW Student Centre on Thursday.

Student Centre enters into the spirit of the season

Erika Koehn knows what she likes, and it’s the big Christmas tree adorning the Commons area in the CAW Student Centre.

“I love it,” said the third-year social work student of the eight-metre tree. “It spreads cheer at a stressful time of year, what with exams and assignments.”

The arboreal accent went up Wednesday and was decorated Thursday. It marks the beginning of a series of activities in the student centre to welcome the holidays, says Sandra Riccio-Muglia, director of programming.

A pop-up art shop will invite students to paint by numbers on Monday, December 4, and Santa will be on hand Tuesday for breakfast, a photo session, and some easy holiday baking. Events will begin both days at 10:30 a.m.

University postpones public opening of downtown SoCA buildings

The University of Windsor is postponing the official public opening of the new home for the School of Creative Arts (SoCA) until the new year. Initially planned for today, Friday, December 1, the rescheduling was necessary for all spaces in the new buildings, including the music performance hall, to be fully cleaned for occupancy and use by students, faculty, and staff.

The move of SoCA to the downtown location remains the primary focus so that programs can begin there in January. The University regrets this unexpected delay, and looks forward to welcoming the community to a public opening that will showcase not only the spectacular new facilities, but also the creative work going on within them.

Lancer teams to play last home games of 2017 this weekend

This weekend marks the last chance for Lancer fans to see teams in action this semester, with contests for men’s and women’s squads in basketball and hockey on offer.

First up, the women’s basketball team will hit the court in the St. Denis Centre at 6 p.m. Friday, December 1, to tip off against the Nipissing Lakers. The men’s teams will play at 8 p.m.

Women’s hockey will face off against the Laurentian Voyageurs at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the rechristened Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex, formerly South Windsor Arena. The Windsor squad will return to the ice Saturday, December 2, to host Nipissing; game time is 4 p.m.

Men’s hockey will take on the Guelph Gryphons in the same venue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

And basketball will bounce back into the St. Denis Centre for action against Laurentian on Saturday, with the men playing at 4 p.m. and the women at 6 p.m.

At each of these contests, the Department of Athletics and Recreation will accept donations of children’s coats, hats, and mittens, as well as other clothing items and cash for its annual Holiday Clothing Drive.

Anyone who makes a charitable contribution of any kind will receive a ballot for a chance to win a Lancer holiday prize pack, with a winner announced at the basketball doubleheader on December 2.
