Almost 3,000 visitors set a record for attendance at the University’s spring open house Saturday, March 3.

Lionel Walsh, assistant vice-president for North American recruitment, lists several factors contributing to the higher numbers.

“I had a particularly wonderful team in the recruitment office this fall, generating a lot of interest,” he says. “The University has been running advertisements across the province and we’ve been collecting a lot of data at the Ontario Universities Fair leading to our application numbers being up as well.”

Zora Savic, who co-ordinates open house in her role with the student recruitment office, says she believes the event did a good job of showcasing the student experience.

“There are just so many people who good things, from faculty presenting about academic programs to food services, Campus Police, facilities staff — people just seemed to care so much,” she says. “More than ever, I felt that everyone did everything they could to make prospective students feel welcomed.”

The public is invited to listen in as Robert Franz, music director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, leads students of the School of Creative Arts in a masterclass Wednesday, March 7.

Franz will work with music majors studying all instruments in both the classical and jazz-pop genres.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the performance hall of the SoCA Armouries, located at 37 University Avenue East. Admission is free. Learn more on the school’s website.

A free public event March 8 will mark the formal launch of a new space for students and recent graduates of the University of Windsor and St. Clair College to stretch their imaginations and creativity muscles.

The EPIC Makers’ Base, a program of the Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre (EPICentre), is equipped with 3-D printers, a CO2 laser cutter and engraver, and other tools to create prototypes — or simply to tinker.

The grand opening is set for 9 a.m. Thursday in room 1133, Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation, but the space opens for sneak peeks Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Becoming a member is fun, practical and free.

Seemingly biological issues can have profoundly social dimensions, says philosopher Patricia Marino, using the example of drugs meant to induce sexual desire.

“The market tended to be women in long-term monogamous relationships who have lost the feeling of lust,” she says. “Perhaps it is wrong to label this as dysfunction, but on the other hand, some women describe longing to experience lustful intensity.”

Dr. Marino, a professor of philosophy at the University of Waterloo, will explore this and other topics in a free public lecture entitled “Science, Sex, and the Search for a Female Viagra” Friday, March 9, at 4:30 p.m. in McPherson Lounge, Alumni Hall.

It is the keynote address of “Critical Reflections,” the undergraduate and graduate philosophy conference. The conference runs all day March 9 and 10, with presentations Friday by undergraduate students and Saturday by graduate students.

The Muslim Students Association is hosting a series of events this week in an effort to educate the UWindsor community about the religion.

Volunteers will staff an Islam Awareness Week display in the CAW Student Centre Commons on Tuesday and Thursday.

• A lecture by therapist Zain Shamoon entitled “Speak Up: Mental Health and Islam,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in room 1121, Neal Education Building;
• Jeopardy! trivia contest with prizes at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in room 1118, Erie Hall; and
• A lecture by imam Hosam Helal, an associate chaplain at Brock University, entitled “The Quran: What’s up with that?” at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in room 133, Chrsyler Hall North.
