Counselling services to extend help over exam period

To help UWindsor students cope with the additional pressures of final exams, the Student Counselling Centre is extending additional supports, says its director, clinical psychologist Mohsan Beg.

“We are extending our hours during the exam period to help students who may be struggling to cope with the normal stress and anxiety of exams,” says Dr. Beg.

The centre has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to offer free and confidential drop-in counselling from 5 to 9 p.m. weeknights and 2 to 6 p.m. on weekends through April 19. Therapists will be available for students to drop in to the Student Counselling Centre, room 293 of the CAW Student Centre.

In addition, one of the centre’s mental health professionals will conduct 20-minute “Hypnosis and Mindfulness for Exams” drop-in sessions to help students develop a positive mindset before sitting for their final exams. The sessions will be held weekdays at 10:15 a.m. in the student centre’s second-floor boardroom through April 19 (excepting Monday, April 16).

Beg also suggests the Peer Support Centre as a resource for those who prefer talking to a fellow student. The centre, located in room 291 of the CAW Student Centre, is staffed by volunteers trained to counsel students on difficulties they may be experiencing. It is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Seeking help when you need it is a sign of strength,” Beg says. “You’re not alone; we’re here to help.”

Concert to support choir trip to New York

Well, they have practised, practised, practised — now what the members of UWindsor choirs need in preparation for their upcoming appearance at New York’s Carnegie Hall is the money for the trip.

The University of Windsor Chamber Choir and the University Singers will perform at the famed venue on May 19. A fundraising concert entitled “Cabaret for Carnegie Hall” is set for Saturday, April 14, in the SoCA Armouries.

The program will feature performances by students as well as jazz vocalist and music instructor Shahida Nurullah. The evening will also include a silent auction, raffle, and a concession stand for attendees.

Madeline Doornaert, a student majoring in jazz-pop vocals, is the lead organizer for Saturday’s cabaret. She says she is looking forward to the chance to perform at Carnegie Hall.

“This is such an amazing opportunity and we’re so grateful for the support we’ve been getting,” she says. “We’re so excited to represent the University of Windsor’s School of Creative Arts and our city on such a major platform.”

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Find more information on the event webpage.

Food services staffer recalled as good-natured colleague

Co-workers and friends are remembering Debbie Kelly as an “all-around good person” who never had a bad word to say about anyone. The long-time UWindsor employee died Thursday, April 5.

“She started in the kitchen in September 1987, and moved into an administrative position the following year to oversee the department’s payroll and student meal card accounts,” says department head Dave McEwen. “Debbie was hard-working, rarely missed a day off work and always had a smile on her face. She loved music, to garden, and to spend her summers in the Rockies, where her son, daughter, and grandchildren live.

“There is no doubt she will be badly missed by the many students, staff, and faculty whose lives she touched.”

Memorial services are scheduled for Tuesday, April 10. Find details in her obituary. Campus flags will be lowered in her memory Tuesday as well.
