Student volunteers will meet at Vanier Hall’s Katzman Lounge, then set out for points around the city, where they will wash cars and shine shoes. All funds raised will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis Canada to further research and find a cure.

Lecture to explore developing effective service-learning courses

A growing body of evidence indicates that service learning can enhance student engagement with core theories and issues explored in a course, says Mylan Engel Jr.

Professor of philosophy at Northern Illinois University, he will make a free public presentation entitled “Designing and Implementing an Effective Service-Learning Course: Lessons Learned,” at 10 a.m. Friday, September 14, in room 3102, Medical Education Building.

Drawing on his own experience, he will provide tips and advice for educators interested in developing and teaching a service-learning course in a heavily theoretical discipline like philosophy.

“I begin by distinguishing and clarifying different conceptions of service learning, then discuss my experiential-learning course on the philosophy of food,” says Dr. Engel.

The event is presented by the UWindsor Department of Philosophy and the Office of Experiential Learning.
