Music school opening to sponsor student scholarship

A new music school will celebrate its opening by launching a scholarship to support a year of lessons for a child in need.

UWindsor alumna Bethany Russell (BMus 2018) is the founder of Brava Studios, which offers private instruction in piano and voice, classes in music theory and ukulele, summer camps, the Jingles4Juniors early music education program, and more.

She says she is excited to offer quality music education to the city.

“At Brava, we believe everyone should have access to music, no matter who they are,” says Russell. “Through our competitive pricing and our scholarship programs, we strive to make musical education something that is accessible to everyone.”

She has partnered with New Beginnings, a non-profit agency serving at-risk youth, to sponsor music education for a child. A raffle will raise funds for the scholarship during the grand opening event on Sunday, Dec. 16.

The public is invited to tour the school at 755 Tecumseh Rd. East from 1 to 4 p.m. Besides the raffle, the event promises live entertainment and discounts on some programs. Find more information, including how to buy a $15 raffle ticket in advance of the draw, on the event Facebook page.

Sport management students get chance to learn from the pros

A mid-October trip to Toronto afforded graduate students of sport management a chance to hear from industry professionals and network with UWindsor kinesiology alumni.

Professor Jess Dixon organized the experience for students in his MHK course in strategic management.

The group toured facilities of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, including the MLSE Launchpad, which encourages young people to reach their full potential through sport. It features a professional-scale basketball court, a rock-climbing wall, and a large teaching kitchen. Staff provides physical and mental health programming free of charge.

“Visiting the MLSE Launchpad enabled students to see what goes on in the not-for-profit sector of sports, and learn how major professional sport organizations are giving back to the communities in which they operate,” said MHK student Zachary Evans.

Dr. Dixon also took the students to the Mattamy Athletic Centre, a repurposing of the former Maple Leaf Gardens to house Ryerson University’s athletic department; the Toronto offices of the sports marketing and talent management agency Wasserman; and a reception with UWindsor grads.

“This event allowed us to interact with alumni from the sport management program and provided insight into some of the careers that are available to us after graduation,” Evans said. “Alumni representing a broad range of sport industry sectors and job classifications were in attendance.”
