Catherine HundlebyPhilosophy professor Catherine Hundleby will deliver her lecture “We should be able to argue well” Friday as practice for a weekend TEDx talk.

Lecture to praise better arguments

Arguing can serve many purposes, and the biggest obstacles to arguing well may be the cross-purposes of the arguers, argues philosophy professor Catherine Hundleby.

She will discuss her position in a free public presentation Friday, Feb. 15, at 3 p.m. in room 1163, Chrysler Hall North.

“Argumentation can improve by attention to the purposes of arguers,” says Dr. Hundleby, co-ordinator of the doctoral program in argumentation studies and a fellow of the Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric.

Her lecture, entitled “We should be able to argue well,” is a dry run of a TEDx talk she will deliver Sunday, Feb. 17, in the Centre for Engineering Innovation.

Other presenters that day include psychology professor Antonio Pascual-Leone; nursing student Chantal Kayumba; Ziad Kobti, director of the School of Computer Science; Charu Chandrasekara, executive director of the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods; Robert Franz, music director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra; and Assumption College High School business teacher Jeremy Bracken.

Presidential Search Committee issues update

The Presidential Search Committee held a retreat and meeting in early February in preparation for going back out to the market in search of the Seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Windsor.

It was a productive meeting where new and continuing members of the committee were able to refresh key documents to the process; review last year’s process to identify areas for improvement; and set the agenda for the ensuing search.

Advertisements for the Seventh President and Vice-Chancellor are being finalized and will be placed in a variety of media shortly. Our consultants, Laverne Smith & Associates Inc. will begin seeking applications. Suggestions of individuals that might be approached to determine their interest in being considered for the position are welcome and may be submitted to Laverne Smith & Associates Inc. at Windsor@lavernesmith.com. All suggestions, including any associated documentation, will be held in strict confidence and reviewed only by Laverne Smith & Associates Inc., which will follow-up on suggested names as appropriate.

The search committee will endeavour to keep the community updated as much as possible throughout the process, while maintaining and respecting the confidentiality of the process which is critical to the integrity of the search. The committee encourages the community to consult the website for new and prior updates which represent the best, most accurate information about the search: http://www.uwindsor.ca/secretariat/309/search-seventh-president-and-vice-chancellor.

Barbecue garners feedback for UWinsite Student

The UWinsite team extends thanks to the students, faculty, and staff who attended the UWinsite Student Appreciation and Feedback barbecue Tuesday and shared experiences with the new student system.

The team reports the following feedback:

More communication

  • You’d like short, frequent updates about the issues that are being worked on and what’s in the queue.
  • There are a few updates below. Check The Lance, DailyNews, the Student Experience Newsletter, and social media for these updates going forward as well.

Support tickets

  • You’re seeing tickets getting cancelled, but not necessarily resolved.
  • Most of the cancelled tickets are duplicates or have been addressed through another channel (phone, email, in person). That said, we are going to adjust our messaging when cancelling a support ticket so you know if we’ve merged one ticket with another and what, generally, the status is of your request.
  • We’ll be sharing more information about the volume of UWinsite Student support tickets, our approach to addressing tickets and current completion rate in the February 20 issue of the Student Experience Newsletter.

Updates

Winter 2019 exam schedule

The exam schedule will be released next week. Students and faculty will be able to access their exam schedules in UWinsite Student. More information will be shared once the exam schedule is posted.

Apply to graduate

Some students are experiencing an error with the “apply to graduate” function in UWinsite Student. We’re working to resolve this error by Monday, Feb. 25. If it is not resolved by this date, the March 1 deadline to apply to graduate for the Spring 2019 Convocation will be extended and students will not be charged the late application fee.

Visual timetable

You’d like to see this back! This is the number one request we heard, and it is on the development radar for UWinsite Student. We do not yet, however, have an estimated time of delivery.
