Student union confers inaugural memorial scholarship

Malik Nembhard, a fourth-year student of criminology, sociology, and social justice, is the inaugural recipient of the $1,000 Jason Solomon Rise Above Scholarship.

The scholarship commemorates a UWindsor student shot and killed in August 2018. Established by the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance, it recognizes racialized students who excel in their academics and exemplify courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

UWSA president Jeremiah Bowers said the awards committee was impressed by a line in Nembhard’s application: I refuse to live below my potential.

“Malik showed us that you don’t have to be the best. You just have to try your best, and never refuse to get back up after you’ve been knocked down,” said Bowers.

Nembhard received his award at a gala Feb. 9 hosted by the Caribbean African Organization of Students, which counted Solomon among its members. Monies raised through an auction that night will benefit the scholarship fund.

Braunte Petric working with camerasHer internship placements helped convince Braunte Petric (right) to pursue a career in the creative field of media production.

Placements provide professional experience for comm studies major

Braunte Petric, a fourth-year student of communication, media and film, completed three internships as a way to make the leap from critical theory and film production to practical experience, industry know-how, and strong professional networks.

“What are my talents? Did I want to work in an office? What was I good at? The only way for me to truly know the answers to these questions would be to go out and work in different fields,” she said.

Pursuing an internship for course credit made the process easy, said Petric: “It’s just like having a job, except you’re only in four demanding courses instead of five.”

She described her experience for Hellene Meyer, a peer advisor in the Office of Career Development and Experiential Learning. Read the entire success story on its website.

student hitting the booksThe final exam schedule for Winter 2019 is now available in UWinsite Student.

Winter 2019 exam schedule released

The final exam schedule for Winter 2019 is available on the Office of the Registrar’s website.

Moving forward, final exam schedules will continue to be made available after classes begin each semester. This change means that final exam dates will not be known during registration nor will they be included in course outlines.

“This new timeline is consistent with exam scheduling practices at other Canadian universities,” says Alice Miller, University Registrar. “It is designed to reduce the number of conflicts in exam schedules.”

The Winter 2019 final exam period runs from April 6 to 17. Thursday, April 18, is the alternate final examinations day.
