University takes delivery of local produce

Food Services has received its first delivery of sweet peppers from greenhouse operator Under Sun Acres, and executive chef Paolo Vasapolli is eager to get cooking with them.

“I know that our customers will enjoy the dishes we create with these beautiful peppers,” says Vasapolli. “They add bright colour and flavour to everything from salads and stir fries to soups and sauces.”

He advises diners to watch for them in food outlets across campus.

Based in Leamington, the company runs one of the largest agricultural greenhouse facilities in the province. The University has entered into a purchase agreement with it as a local source for fresh produce.

Vasapolli notes that Under Sun Acres owner Chris Del Greco threw in a bonus with the initial shipment — basil plants and plum tomatoes.

“I would like to thank Chris for this generous contribution,” Vasapolli says. “I’m really excited to get some of these seasonal specialties onto our patrons’ plates!”

Farmers market promises something for everyone

When the farmers market returns to campus next week, organizer Sandra Riccio-Muglia hopes patrons notice a difference.

Director of events for the student centre, she has recruited new vendors to make it bigger, better, and fresher — and expects it to grow over its six-week season.

“We’ve got people lined up to sell baked goods, holistic items, produce, you name it,” says Riccio-Muglia. “A little something for everyone, so come support local and buy a treat.”

The market will run from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the student centre, Thursdays from Sept. 19 to Oct. 31. Riccio-Muglia adds that vendors will change and so suggests patrons “take a stroll” to check it out each week.
