Weekend of varsity action to include efforts at breast cancer awareness

Lancer athletics will host eight games and a track meet in a weekend that will also feature activities dedicated to raising awareness of the fight against breast cancer.

Basketball will get the weekend rolling, playing host to the York Lions in the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse on Friday, Feb. 7. The women will tip off at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. That same evening, men’s hockey will face off against the Ryerson Rams at 7:30 p.m. at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

On Saturday, Lancer teams will trade in their traditional blue and gold for pink as they raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. At each game, athletics will sell special T-shirts for $12 and Shoot for the Cure tote bags for $2, with the proceeds going directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Jane Parsons of the Canadian Cancer Society says the support is appreciated.

“The ongoing commitment of these young adults in their support or the breast cancer cause is admirable,” she says. “Each year, funds raised through Shoot for the Cure support gold standard breast cancer research in areas of risk reduction, screening, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.”

The day will start with volleyball hosting the Western Mustangs at the St. Denis Centre. The women will play at noon, and the men at 2 p.m. Windsor’s men are currently ranked 10th in the country.

Men’s hockey will return to the ice at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to take on the No. 5 Toronto Varsity Blues. Prior to the game, the Lancers will salute graduating player Alex Friesen.

Lancer basketball will also honour graduating seniors in ceremonies before Saturday contests against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Game time is for 6 p.m. for the women, ranked seventh in U Sports, and 8 p.m. for the men.

On Sunday, the St. Denis Centre is host to 11 schools for the 30th annual track and field team challenge. Doors will open at 11 a.m.

Tickets for Lancer basketball are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. Tickets for Lancer volleyball, hockey, and track and field are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Find more info at goLancers.ca.

Quantum physicist to give seminar on campus

A presentation by a quantum physicist Friday, Feb. 7, is part of a program promoting women in science.

Aligning with this year’s UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Shohini Ghose, a professor in physics and computer science at Wilfrid Laurier University, will lead a seminar as part of the USci Network’s Women in Science (WinS) speaker series.

Dr. Ghose is director of the Laurier Centre for Women in Science and president of the Canadian Association of Physics.

"We are thrilled to be hosting Dr. Ghose for our annual Women in Science seminar,” says biology professor Dora Cavallo-Medved, director of the USci Network. “It is a great opportunity for our students to hear from and interact with such a powerful role model in science. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience both in her discipline and in leadership.”

Ghose’s seminar, titled “Balancing the Gender Equation in Science,” is set for 1 p.m. Friday in the Essex CORe atrium.

Film professors to screen comedy feature at festivals

UWindsor film instructors Mike Stasko and Theodore Bezaire will screen their latest feature Boys vs. Girls at a variety of film festivals over the next couple months, starting this Friday, Feb. 7.

The film, shot in Windsor, will be shown Friday at the Florida Comedy Film Festival and the Central Michigan International Film Festival, with these appearances to follow:

Mike Stasko wrote and directed, Theodore Bezaire produced the movie, which tells the story of a summer camp forced to go co-ed in 1990 for the first time in its 70-year history. Canadian comedy veterans Colin Mochrie and Kevin McDonald star as the camp’s director and caretaker, respectively.

The movie was made possible with strong support from the local community, says Stasko: “It’s great to take this Windsor-made film and start to share it with an audience on the world stage and show then what our city can do.”

He notes that current students in the University of Windsor’s Communication, Media and Film program served on the crew, including second assistant director Rachel McEwen.

“Before working on Boys vs. Girls, I didn’t know what sort of a career I wanted,” says McEwen, a fourth-year film major. “But when I started working on this project, I quickly realized that I was passionate about assistant directing and that I wanted to continue to pursue those kinds of roles on film sets.”
