Philosophy student to enumerate practical values of argumentation theory

May 28th, 2012

Laura Benacquista, a master’s candidate in philosophy, will discuss three practical values of argumentation theory in a free public lecture on Tuesday, May 29:

  • teaching and learning valuable argumentation skills, and the associated reasoning skills;
  • facilitating openness, understanding, and motivation;
  • assisting in the achievement of goals and ends prescribed by social, political, ethical and moral philosophical theories.

“The values identified do not comprise an exhaustive list, and they do not necessarily follow from argumentation, but they should nonetheless be considered important aspects of argumentation theory,” says Benacquista.

She is a student fellow of the Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric, which is sponsoring this event. It will begin at 3 p.m. in the first floor seminar room of Parker House, 105 Sunset Avenue.
