May 30, 2011 was a historic day for our University when we announced plans to relocate the Music and Visual Arts programs downtown to the historic Armouries building, with the goal of welcoming our first class in the fall of 2013.
In addition to the building itself, the University received $10 million from the City of Windsor and $15 million from the Government of Ontario toward the redesign of the building. On that day, we also revealed our plans to investigate the feasibility of moving the Social Work program and the Centre for Executive Education into the Windsor Star building.
With the support of the City and the Province, and their belief in our University to understand our capital needs and long term goals, we can now begin to realize our aspiration to create inspiring spaces for our students in the downtown, and facilitate in an unprecedented way the ability of our University to contribute to the social and artistic fabric of our community.
The request for proposals process has already begun to engage architects to re-imagine the Armouries as a new space for Music and Visual Arts, programs with nearly 500 students, in addition to faculty and staff.
As we head into the next development stages, all of our decisions continue to be centred on what is best for our students. We will soon launch a new website to share the latest downtown news and development plans and to gather your questions and feedback as we move through this exciting process.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alan Wildeman
President and Vice Chancellor, University of Windsor
