As I write this (mid-July), it’s still a bit unreal that 40 years of intense involvement in the School of Music is coming to an end. The usual rejoinder to that is “see how it feels in September when everyone is returning to begin a new academic year—you’ll know it’s really happening then.”
So many changes! and yet many things remain the same. It is with pride that I see our graduates making a difference in the world, more often now in the students they send our way (grand-students, we could dub them). Our growth to some 175 students indicates that we have become recognized as an established music school. The work we did early on in forging relationships in the community continues in an exciting way and in new directions appropriate to today’s world. National recognition is growing in several ways. BUT--we’re still in the bowling alley, even if it’s been upgraded. I do believe however that our achievements and strong place in the life of Windsor/Essex, will, in the hands of our brilliant new faculty contribute to growing awareness of the importance of the arts, and that a facility will follow as a result.
It’s been a terrific ride. I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you who took the time to send me such kind wishes in the last few months. You bring back many fond memories. I’ll very much miss current students, as well as esteemed faculty colleagues. Thanks always for all your support and encouragement. Much of our success, I believe, flows from our long-standing collegiality. Dorothy, Trevor and Susan—you’re incredible! I’d be remiss in not acknowledging Dean Cecil Houston for his unfailing support of what we do. Finally and in particular, I must mention Dick Householder, who although being officially retired for four years now, has returned to be Acting Director. On behalf of us all, thanks for everything, Dick!
I’ll keep in touch, and am always delighted to hear from any of you.
