Review in Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 Detroit Free Press
Michigan-based guitarist Steven Dearing has made several recordings as part of the Dearing Concert Duo with his wife, soprano and flutist Abha Dearing, but "July Recital" ( * * *, stevendearing.com) is his first solo CD. It's a rewarding set consisting mostly of engaging 20th-Century and contemporary works played with charismatic musicianship and clean technique. The three-movement "Libra Sonatine" by the French composer Roland Dyens (born 1955) stands out for its rhythmic invention -- the opening "India" swirls through a string of snappy meter changes -- and a richly lyrical melodic-harmonic language that leaves the scent of jazz improvisation in the air.

Elsewhere, the "Cavatina" by Polish composer Alexandre Tansman (1897-1986) meanders through a neoclassical landscape and the 20th-Century Spaniard Federico Moreno Torroba's "Suite Castellana" seduces through Mediterranean color and perfume.
