The Healing Power of Music: Music for Young Ears,

Media Event at Windsor Regional Hospital

On March19, 2009, a press event occurred at the Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) Met campus that focused on the new paediatric program of the Music Therapy in Medicine program at WRH, called “Music for Young Ears.” The program is a partnership among the Music Therapy and Medicine Program of the Music Therapy Centre and the School of Music, the WRH and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO). This new initiative is made possible by a grant, initiated by WSO, from Green Shield Canada. At this media event, 4th year music therapy student, Demian Kogutek, helped paediatric patients interact with and conduct the WSO quartet that played songs and animal sounds for the children in the WRH playroom. The patients and their parents have been very happy with this new program in which young patients can hear, see and learn about orchestral instruments in a creative and expressive setting. “Music for Young Ears” is a wonderful new addition to the Music Therapy and Medicine Program.

MTSA NEWS

The Music Therapy Student Association (MTSA) plays a vital role in the life of the Music Therapy Centre. Because of our highly talented and motivated students in the Music Therapy Program, University of Windsor, our Music Therapy Centre is able to provide many innovative and meaningful services to our community in Windsor and the surrounding areas. Thank you MTSA!

The MTSA had a busy year supporting the initiatives of our Music Therapy Program, and hosting two major and very successful events. In the first week of March, we had our first Pepper’s Pasta Night fundraiser which featured great food, great company and live jazz music. We exceeded our sales goal and had a lot of fun in the process. This fundraiser was to raise money for our annual Music Therapy Conference which was held on March 14th on the topic of Alternative/Complementary Therapies. Four distinguished speakers shared their knowledge of clown doctoring, hypnotherapy, sensory therapy and the use of service dogs with children with autism. Donations were accepted at this event on behalf of the Music Therapy Centre and it was a great success! Thank you to everyone for supporting all the MTSA’s initiatives over this past year. Denton Callander, MTSA President.
