Program Description

The Department of Economics offers two study programs leading to the degree of Masters of Arts in Economics.

Program M2

The traditional M.A. program involves one year of study. Admission requires an honours degree in economics, or equivalent, with at least a “B” standing from a recognized university.

Option classes can also be taken from other departments (notably from the Mathematics & Statistics department or the Odette School of Business), subject to approbation by the Graduate director.

Program M1

This stream is intended for students who have a general degree in Economics or a degree in a discipline other than economics and who have some quantitative training (for example, mathematics, statistics, science or social science graduates who have taken some economics courses). This program involves a qualifying year, covering economic theory and some applications, before entry into the Program M2. In this second year, candidates will pursue the conventional M.A. program. Graduates of a three-year B.A. in Economics may also apply for this program in lieu of an honours year.

A minimum required grade of B- is required in these courses.

The Economics Graduate Committee will decide if the applicant should be offered admission to the M1 or the M2 program, based on the applicant's academic background.

Generally speaking, applicants with a 4 year undergraduate honours degree in Economics are considered for admission to the 1 year (M2) program. Other applicants, if offered admission, are usually directed to the 2 year (M1) Masters program, but still must have an Economics or related academic background. A 3 year undergraduate degree in Economics is a general undergraduate degree, not an honours degree. If an applicant has not taken advanced undergraduate level micro and macroeconomics courses they would not be eligible for the 1 year Masters program but could be considered for the 2 year Masters program.

To be considered for admission to either the M1 or the M2 program, applicants must have completed one course each in university level calculus, linear algebra and statistics and must have a minimum overall GPA of at least B (73 %) (this is 9 out of 13 GPA at the University of Windsor). Note that equivalencies are computed for international students.
